Yes, I am approaching my mid 30's very soon! However, I still consider myself early 30's, well just because I can, that is until December.:) Anyway, I grew up in a generation where playing outside all day was the "norm". Running and roaming through the woods, playing in the creek and the ever treasured trips to "the waterfall". We lived in Flatwoods, dirt roads, gardens and "farm animals" were just normal to me. I miss the more simple times ALOT and wish the boys could grow up out in the middle of nowhere like I did~sometimes. It doesn't bother me that there is no Starbucks or day spa or even a WalMart for that matter in my backdoor.
I do miss those much simpler times but thankful for every blessing the Lord has given us and allows us to be so spoiled. Yea, admit it. You and I are very spoiled considering the days that some of our Parents and Grandparents lived in. Anyway, nothing thrills me more than to sit down and watch "old shows" together. Little House On The Prairie, Flipper, Leave It To Beaver, etc. These always take me back. And also the classic movies. One of which, we watched again for the 100th time this week. "Where The Red Fern Grows", CLASSIC!!LOVE!! Surprise!! The boys LOVE it too. Good movies, the real classics, are the ones that ALL generations enjoy.
I remember so sharply when Levi got this movie. He was "2" at the time, A new "Big Brother". My Dad came over to visit and see the new grand baby and spend some time with Levi. Also, to give me a break and a chance to nurse all my wounds, you know the ones that come with birthing and nursing a 8 1/2 lb baby. Anyway, hormones were very high at the time and my house was running over with love and oohing and goohing over my now precious family of 4. Love those memories!! Anyway, so this movie is extra special to me because it was brought to my attention again at a very extra special time in my life.
We have watched this movie over and over. But this week was hilarious. It truly made me stop and think about how far I have come from the days of my childhood. OK, I was 27 when I had Levi and 29 when I had Houston. That's not really old is it?! Anyway, back to the movie. You know the story. Billy Coleman works and saves his hard earned money for some coon hounds. He struggles with the thought of buying them because his father needs a new mule. But he decides to get the coon hounds, buys his family a nice little something and returns home. If you haven't watched it in a while, get it and set down with the fam and enjoy it one night. The boys and I were all laying on the couch watching it together. This is the conversation:
Levi: "Momma, what's wrong? Why is he so upset about getting his dogs or not?"
Me: "Well, Son, he knows his Daddy really needs a mule to help on the farm and he can't decide if his coon dogs are more important than a mule.
Levi: "Awww, that's sweet ain't it Momma? He's sensitive ain't he Momma, like us."
Me: "Yea, he is and he's just being thoughtful. We always need to think about other people too not just us."
Levi: "Yea, we need to, but he wants them coon hounds so bad, and he worked so hard to just be 12 years old."
Me: "Yep, but he still knows his Daddy really needs a mule and doesn't have the $ to get it."
Levi: "A mule?! I can't believe they had mules back in them days."
Me: "Honey, a mule has been around forever, since the Ark!"
Levi: "Man, I didn't realize they are that old. We just now got one to use at the hunting club. I bet he would have so much fun out in those coon woods with a mule, wouldn't he Momma?
Oh my goodness!! What a huge difference in mine and his generation!! I see a mule as a donkey and he sees a mule as an ATV!! Simple times, oh how we need more of them. I could not quit laughing. But he was serious. I thought to myself........OK I really am getting old. And if you don't think you are, your children will always remind you ever now and then. You gotta love them!!

I was getting prepared for a "tear feast" when I started reading this post...but I'm telling you, at the end, that has to be the funniest thing I have heard in a very long time!!! The innocence of children just amazes me!!!! Great post Angie!!
Still smiling from the story. And so love Where the Red Fern grows...remember sitting in the library watching it and Ol' Yeller in Elementary school. Good times.
Oh do they ever remind us of our age. That movie is an all time favorite. Brenna is happiest when she's in Alabama out in the middle of nowhere. She'd gladly trade city life for Berry or the Cleveland community. Thanks for the laugh!
